Geico High Point National

There was rain Thursday and Friday but Saturday was dry and sunny.  However, the rain did have an impact in line development and lap times.  If you noticed lap times were quicker in the second moto than the first as the track dried out.  Rain, shine, hail, wind, or any other kind of weather disaster could not stop Ryan Villopoto and his Monster Energy Kawasaki as he logged another 1-1. The 250MX was a bit more exciting as the two Red Bull KTM’s battled for the overall while a couple Geico Honda boys fought for the third step.  Check out who did what from the Stats & Results feature:

Sacramento Endurocross

Have you ever been to an Endurocross?  If not, make plans to go when the Endurocross Series makes a stop near you. Think moto with Lincoln logs, boulders, water crossings, and anything else they can fit into an arena for these guys to try and go over.  It may not be as fast as Supercross but the racing is just as exciting if not more so.  Our Austin White shot the video while Mike Emery capture the flavor with photos.

Hero

First coming into High Point. First in qualifying. First in both motos. And now even further in first going into the off weekend. The only thing that would make Ryan Villopoto’s weekend even better would to be this week’s Hero.  Well Ryan, your Wednesday just got a bit better.

Villopoto and his Monster Energy Kawasaki have been on point all season. He just looks fast and that is just sitting behind the gate waiting for it to drop.  When it does drop, he is the fastest on the track. I almost wish he gets a bad start because it is so amazing to watch him come through the pack. Ryan Dungey may be the closest to Villopoto in speed, but the riding styles are as opposite as cats and dogs, Felix and Oscar, and Mac and PC. Where Dungey is calm, cool, and calculating, Villopoto’s mind set seems to be get the F out of my way!  I’m either going around your or through you. His pass on Dungey in moto 2 after the uphill triple was the perfect NFG example.  If you want to go to the inside, you double single.  If you clear the triple you rail the outside berm. Villopoto doesn’t care; he’ll clear the triple AND hit the inside line to pass Dungey like a boss, to borrow a phrase. The fact that Stewart was in the lead when he had his front rotor issue was of no consequence, Villopoto was stalking him down like big game and would have him stuffed and mounted on his wall.

Someone better set up their game and do it quick. Villopoto looks to be in control, and in the rare moments he gets a bit out of control, he’s still in control.  If he’s picking up a minimum six points every weekend, the last few rounds will be inconsequential.  But that won’t matter to Villopoto. Remember the Vegas SX finale he didn’t even have to ride? Yeah, he has one speed and it’s first to the podium.

Zero

Will the real James Stewart please stand up?  He is this week’s Zero because that is how much luck he had at High Point. We saw a bit the old Bubba at Muddy Creek and for that he earned Hero status.  High Point was supposed to be another step in the right direction to reclaim glory. Unfortunately 12th place after lap one in moto 1 in this field ain’t gonna cut it. To add insult to injury, late in the moto he pulls a fist full of tear offs and then has to ditch his goggles. Consequence….a rock to the eye and a DNF by pulling out on the last lap.

Who cares right? Moto 2 is the great redeemer. A chance to right the wrongs from moto 1. And boy did he do an about face.  Third place across the holeshot stripe and into the lead.  He started to sprint and pull a bit of a gap on the Ryan’s but they were closing in. I’m not sure what his training during the week entails but I’m willing to guess it includes breaking a mirror while walking under a ladder with a black cat crossing his path. He led six laps and on the last lap led he breaks a front rotor and logs his second DNF in a row.  Who breaks a front rotor with a rotor guard on AND in the lead with no one in front?  It is just the drama Stewart brings to the series. Hopefully he can bring some good luck at Budds Creek.

High Point has been hosting a national since the late 1070′s and has hosted many amateur races.  Seasoned vets and rookies alike have logged many laps on the storied track. The big question going into the weekend was whether the foretasted rain would come. A brand new track for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship greeted the riders at Muddy Creek Raceway. Who was able to adapt the quickest in practice and translate that into the motos? Dean Wilson’s crash last week that caused him to sit out Muddy Creek was worse than first thought. He needs surgery to repair it and will be out the rest of the season.

As if shoulder injuries were contagious it was announced Zach Bell will also go under the knife to repair shoulder injury and miss the rest of the outdoor season.

Hero

Go back and watch the second 450MX moto now. Do it.  Specifically the first lap, starting at 2 minutes and 27 seconds into the race.  Witness the magic that happens in the next 43 seconds between James Stewart and Mike Alessi as soon as they land on the finish line jump.  Stewart to the outside and Alessi bombs an inside line that is so rough his leg is getting ripped off, but he doesn’t give a flying Wallenda as he keeps it pinned. Alessi is drifts over after the turn to block Stewart’s line, but does Stew care? Nope.  A quick rebound off the right side of the track, cut left and scrub right over the table.  That scrub was so sick that Stewart’s ghost of 125 past would be jealous and all Alessi can do is just look down and know he was just posterized.  But it’s not done yet!  They are side-by-side over the next table into the left hander.  This time it is Stewart on the inside and Alessi taking the long way around.  As they are turning left out of the corner and into a small table, Stewart has his left leg up and out as he is going up the jump face.  He actually scrubs the table top, with his leg still out, and lands in perfect position to complete the left turn. It is then a drag race to the next right hander that leads into the HUGE step up triple.  Stewart still commands the inside and Alessi goes out to the smooth outside.  This time as they exit the corner it is Alessi’s turn to cross from left to right behind Stewart as they launch off the massive jump. Stewart hugs the inside, in the air, and with his left leg out ready to land in position for the left hander.  Alessi lands and squares up the corner and squirts by Stewart on the inside to take over third.

There you have it.  43 seconds that made the 30 minute moto worth it.  That is the type of riding that us mere mortals cannot comprehend. Race pace speed, rutted track, a competitor mere inches from you trying to claim the spot.  After watching that 43 seconds I either have to go ride or have a cigarette.  It was THAT good!

Zero

Chad Reed is  not a zero, per se, but it sure sucks the condition he is in right now.  He had his best overall finish at Muddy Creek with a 12th.  A 12th! This is a past champion and someone that was battling for the championship just a short couple years ago before his now infamous Millville get off. He has played it pretty close to the vest so far this season just alluding to some sort  of physical ailment that he is working on.  He better figure it out soon because if he waits any longer the two Ryan’s, Barcia, and Alessi will be too far out there for him to do anything about it.

With a crash 6 minutes into the moto that caused his boot to become fully unbuckled it was a hard fought charge back to 4th and the final overall podium spot and zero points gained or lost to Tomac.

Eli Tomac #17 – Geico Factory Connection Honda

Overall: 2nd (4-1)
Qualified: 2nd (2:02.984)
Fastest Lap: 2:00.647 (Moto 2, Lap 3)
Slowest Lap: 2:12.794 (Moto 1, Lap 12)
Turning Point: A first moto crash is all that was needed to keep Tomac in 4th. Second moto he got the holeshot and led the entire 30+2.

Marvin Musquin #25 – Red Bull KTM

He charged hard all moto only to loose some ground late in the moto and fighting to get it back with a 4th. The moto win streak ended but Villopoto certainly has not lost any speed.

Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National

It was a mile high motocross race in Lakewood CO where the 450MX was almost a repeat of Hangtown and the 250MX showed some parity. It was the two Ryan’s going 1-2 and a first moto mistake by James Stewart allowed Justin Barcia to put his Muscle Milk Honda on the podium. The 250MX class looked to be another Ken Roczen runaway judging by the first moto, but Eli Tomac and his teammate Zach Osborne had an answer in the second moto.

Just when I thought the TV coverage could not get any worse, they go and do something like at the Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National……and totally redeem themselves! Yes, last week I was one of many critics of what was a scavenger hunt to watch the motos. But, in a sport where you are only as good as your last race (coverage) the masses are happy as a ginger on a green bike with a red number plate.

I now know how it feels to be a sick ‘n ball fan that  can sit on their couch on a Saturday and watch hours of their favorite football/basketball/baseball team for the afternoon. How nice was it to sit down at noon (or whatever timezone you are in) and have four hours and four motos lined up? Yard work be damned. No time to take out the garbage, the gate is about to drop! Sorry honey, you’ll have to go watch that new Bradley Cooper/Jennifer Aniston rom-com crapola by yourself, the second motos are about to start!

I may have accomplished less than Rip Van Winkle on ambian but there was a feeling of accomplishment.  I got to waste the afternoon like any other red blooded, beer swillin’, manly man watching the sport I love live. It was like (Lloyd) Christmas Day!

Zero

Joe Gibbs Racing is as close to a Yamaha factory effort you can have without actually being factory Yamaha.  So, to have that kind of team it seems that they should be battling up at the front with Kawasaki, KTM, and Suzuki. But that is not the case. JGR has gone back to a team they had in 2010 with Justin Brayton and Josh Grant.  Brayton is a hard worker and always seems to gain momentum as the season progresses.  Josh Grant won JGR their first Supercross race and a couple moto wins and an overall. This start to the nationals have been anything other than a factory effort. 18th and 24th at Hangtown. Thunder Valley was better with a 12th and 22nd.  As a team they have 26 points after two rounds.  That puts them just ahead of Kevin Strijbos who has only raced two motos on a bike that is nothing like his GP machine.  But if you are Brayton or Grant, you can look at the bright side in that there is light at the end of the JGR tunnel. When James Stewart left the team, he won four motos in a row. When Davi Milsaps left, he won A1 and held the points lead for half of the Supercross season.

The Ranch in Anza, California was host to the Southwest Loretta Lynn Regional Championship over Memorial day weekend. With over 700 entries for each day of racing and five spots open, it became a battle for qualifying positions all the way down to the final laps. Some top names like Marky Worth, Justin Hoeft, Thomas Covington, Shane McElrath and so many more that deserve to be listed. We took up the helicopter to grab some sweet shots of the whole facility on Sunday. It was a packed house as you can see with one of the sickest tracks in southern California.

The Pro class was mostly dominated by the these three: Thomas Covington, Shane McElrath and Tyler Enticknap. On a side note Thomas Covington will be taking time off to get knee surgery for an injury sustained back in October at the Monster Energy Cup.

McElrath the TLD/Red Bull/Honda backed rider ended up winning 250A and Open Pro Sport overall this weekend. He also did it on a 250f, sometimes coming from back in the pack to get the win. It made it very interesting to watch at times.

Marky Worth was on fire this weekend. The little Volcom rider just moved up to big bikes after Loretta’s last year. We missed him in Texas this  past spring due to a broken collar bone.  He won every moto at The Ranch except for his last one where he had a bad get off while way out front. The race would be red flagged and Marky would be life flighted out. The latest word on Marky is no broken bones, just a bad concussion and a couple of cuts on his face. Hopefully this new comer to the class can rebound and show his speed at Loretta’s later this summer.

Sean Cantrell took no prisoners at The Ranch. Blasting out 4 out 4 overalls, giving him 4 golden tickets to his class of choosing at Loretta’s later this summer. It was an impressive weekend of riding for the youngster who just switched brands this past year.

Jett Reynolds is no stranger to Loretta’s. He will be going there on his cobra’s in both the 65cc class and 51cc class.

Daniel Baker has only been on the bike just a few times before this weekend. He was another who chose to ride just his 250f. It would serve him well as he went home with a 3rd and 4th overall this weekend.

Justin Hoeft the other TLD/Red Bull/Honda mounted rider had a crazy weekend. He was able to grab two class entries for the big dance and earned it with 2 second place finishes. If I’m not mistaken he went 6 for 6 last year at Loretta’s on his 85′s.

Turning Point: Musquin starts up fron and seems to just settle in the 4th spot. He sees the speed of the three guys he needs to chase as they are usually passing him on their way to the front.

Zach Osborne #338 – Geico Factory Connection Honda

Qualified: 3rd (2:06.065)
Fastest Lap: 2:09.544 (Moto 2, Lap 3)
Slowest Lap: 2:17.358 (Moto 1, Lap 2)
Turning Point: Osborne had two turning points. The first was a crash early in moto 1 where he had to charge back through the pack. The other was a last lap pass in moto 2 pass Ken Roczen to secure third overall.

Ken Roczen #94 – Red Bull KTM

Overall: 2nd (1-3)
Qualified: 2nd (2:05.076)
Fastest Lap: 2:06.873 (Moto 1, Lap 5)
Slowest Lap: 2:15.389 (Moto 2, Lap 16)
Turning Point: It almost looked like Roczen got tired in the 2nd moto. He did not have the dominance he showed in the frist three motos of the year.

Eli Tomac #17 – Geico Factory Connection Honda

Overall: 1st (2-1)
Qualified: 1st (2:03.740)
Fastest Lap: 2:07.069 (Moto 1, Lap 6)
Slowest Lap: 2:14.864 (Moto 2, Lap 16)
Turning Point: Tomac got the overall win but he left some points on the table. He caught Ken Roczen late in moto 1 and looked to be quicker. A small mistake on the last lap washing out the front end allowed Roczen to cruise to the first moto win and taking the 25 points. Will thos three points come back to haunt Tomac?

 The Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship joined the mile high club this weekend with a stop in Lakewood CO for the Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National.  Ryan Villopoto hoped to continue the dominance he showed at Hangtown and Ryan Dungey looked to counter.  Also a couple GP racers from Belgium fresh off a Brazilian GP decided to join the race. There was more of the same and a few others that improved once the ponits were tallied at the end of the day. Check out the stats and results.

Turning Point: Stewart got tangled up with Jake Weimer in the first moto when Weimer fell over in a corner at the 4:20 mark.  It took a while for Stewart to get his bike started and finished lap two in 38th. He passed 23 riders to finish the moto n 15th.

Clement Desalle #925 – Rockstar Energy Drink Motosport.com

Overall: 6th (5-7)
Qualified: 2nd (2:03.517)
Fastest Lap: 2:06.468 (Moto 1, Lap 2)
Slowest Lap: 2:12.719 (Moto 2, Lap 17)
Turning Point: Like his GP teammate Strijbos, Desalle had to adapt to a much quicker racing schedlue than the GP. He started his day off well with qualifying 2nd.

Mike Alessi #800 – Motoconcepts

Overall: 5th (6-6)
Qualified: 12th (2:06.078)
Fastest Lap: 2:07.255 (Moto 1, Lap 2)
Slowest Lap: 2:12.935 (Moto 2, Lap 17)
Turning Point: Alessi made a pass late in moto 2 on lap 14 for 6th on Desalle to secure 5th over all

Trey Canard #41 – Muscle Milk Honda

Overall: 4th (4-5)
Qualified: 9th (2:05.425)
Fastest Lap: 2:06.919 (Moto 1, Lap 3)
Slowest Lap: 2:13.942 (Moto 2, Lap 17)
Turning Point: Canard’s starts kept him up front in both motos. He pretty much finished where he started. No fades nor any hard charges through the pack.

Justin Barcia #51 – Muscle Milk Honda

Overall: 3rd (3-4)
Qualified: 8th (2:05.403)
Fastest Lap: 2:04.737 (Moto 1, Lap 5)
Slowest Lap: 2:19.738 (Moto 2, Lap 16)
Turning Point: Two holeshots make the day go a bit easier and that is exactly what Justin Barcia did. He got a good look at the two Ryan’s speed and knows where he needs to pick it up

Ryan Dungey #1 – Red Bull KTM

Overall: 2nd (2-2)
Qualified: 4th (2:04.132)
Fastest Lap: 2:04.390 (Moto 1, Lap 8)
Slowest Lap: 2:12.720 (Moto 1, Lap 17)
Turning Point: It was not until about mid point in each moto that Dungey was able to get around Barcia. In moto 1 it was for the lead and moto 2 for 2nd.

Ryan Villopoto #2 – Monster Energy Kawasaki

Overall: 1st (1-1)
Qualified: 1st (2:03.431)
Fastest Lap: 2:04.465 (Moto 1, Lap 11)
Slowest Lap: 2:11.756 (Moto 2, Lap 17)
Turning Point: Vilopoto had to recover from a moto 1 first lap mistake to chase down Barcia in 2nd and pass Dungey for the lead.  Moto 2 was a bit easier with a pass on Barcia for the lead at the 7:20 mark.

This weekend everyone heads to the altitude of the Rockwell Watches Thunder Valley National. Site of the first night national and a Motocross Des Nations Thunder Valley rarely disappoints.

This week NBC Sports will now air the first motos live this Saturday from the  beginning at 1 p.m. (Mountain time, 3 p.m. ET) and the second motos will move to FUEL TV for live airing beginning at 3 p.m. Mountain (5 p.m. ET).

Outdoor Motocross is back! The speed, the endurance, the skill that is needed to go 30+2 is a young man’s game and takes constant training and 100% focus for success. Or does it?  From the one-and-done category comes fan favorite Travis Preston. Preston last pro race was back in 2009. That was Ryan Villopoto’s rookie year. Ryan Dungey wasn’t even racing the big bikes yet.  Between then and now some riders had started and ended their careers! But Preston was back for a one off race for JGR Yamaha.

So, those who can’t do teach, right? Preston has been running a bi-coastal motocross school but lest we forget Preston was the spoiler to James Stewart’s rookie season in 2002 by wining the west coast SX championship. Preston has also done some work and a bit of local racing for JGR Yamaha, so he hasn’t gotten all bloated like his rival Eric Sorby.

So, why if running a successful school and having a good gig with JGR would he want to subject himself to 39 other riders and a Hangtown track that gets so rough the Mars rover probably couldn’t make a lap?  Like any good politician would say, “It’s for the kids”. Preston wanted to prove that the techniques he was teaching actually work.  Evidently he’s a “do what I say AND what I do”  kind of teacher. So, how did he fare?

Probably the only downside is he did not get the TV coverage his JGR teammates Justin Brayton and Josh Grant got.  Brayton was shown standing by his bike in the pits getting a front flat tire changed. Grant was shown running up front in moto 1 then he was shown starting his bike after a get off.  All Travis did was score points in both motos and finish 17th overall, ahead of his two full time teammates.

After the race in an interview he said the track was rough, he had arm pump, he was getting pelted with roost and wished he could have rode better but it was the most fun he had racing a dirtbike as far back as he could remember. Which student will question what Preston has to say now?

Zero

Short and sweet this week because I am know I am not in the minority here. Who else missed the second motos? You need an abacus, Ouija board, and an MIT doctoral candidate to try and figure out when and where the races will be on.  It’s like duck duck goose with Allisports, NBC Sports, Fuel TV, and NBC Sports Live Extra and I think we are the goose. Practice was streamed on NBC something-or-other. I couldn’t get it. First motos on Fuel. My cable provider only has Fuel in standard def. Second motos on the same web site as practice so I was SOL.  But not to worry, I can catch the replay, right?  Nope. Some hockey game went into OT.  That sucks, eh? My kingdom for one channel and a specific time, live or delayed, that I can set my DVR for. I don’t care. I just don’t want to be hunting down motos like the fat kid in Goonies looking for One Eyed Willy’s treasure.

Supercross is done and now it is time for the two coasts to become one fast 250 class as the complete field lined up at the Red Bull Hangtown Motocross Classic for the first of 12 rounds of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship. Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s defending champion Blake Baggett rejoined the class after suffering a wrist injury in Supercross.  Red Bull KTM’s Ken Roczen fresh off his championship is ready to battle with his teammate Marvin Musquin and Geico Honda’s Eli Tomac.  How did they and the rest of the top ten set up their championship plans?

Turning Point: Osborne crashed with Marvin Musquin just before the finish line double at the start of moto two at the 6:45 mark. He crossed the finish line in 10th and charged back to finish the moto in 5th

Marvin Musquin #25 – Red Bull KTM

Overall: 4th (4-4)
Qualified: 4th (1:59.530)
Fastest Lap: 2:04.617 (Moto 1, Lap 6)
Slowest Lap: 2:14.496 (Moto 2, Lap 3)
Turning Point: Musquin was the other half of the crash with Zach Osborne.  Marvin was able to pick up his bike a bit quicker and did not loos too much and finished one spot ahead of Osborne in 4th.

Eli Tomac #17 – Geico Factory Connection Honda

Overall: 3rd (2-3)
Qualified: 1st (1:57.513)
Fastest Lap: 2:03.139 (Moto 1, Lap 16)
Slowest Lap: 2:13.461 (Moto 2, Lap 17)
Turning Point: A bad start in moto 2 put Tomac in 10th after lap one.  A hard charge put him into third on lap  five where he stayed for the reamainder of the moto and scured third overall.

Blake Baggett #1 – Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki

Qualified: 3rd (1:59.495)
Fastest Lap: 2:03.575 (Moto 1, Lap 5)
Slowest Lap: 2:14.328 (Moto 2, Lap 17
Turning Point: Baggett’s first race back since A1 he gets the holeshot in moto one and was in second the entire second moto. He tied in points with Tomac but his better second moto finish earned him second overall.  He is still recovering from his wrist injury so starting up front was the best possible scenario to kick off the first round.

Ken Roczen #94 – Red Bull KTM

Overall: 1st (1-1)
Qualified: 5th (1:59.816)
Fastest Lap: 2:02.818 (Moto 1, Lap 7)
Slowest Lap: 2:13.658 (Moto 2, Lap 17)
Turning Point: Early passes on Baggett and Musquin for the lead in moto 1 and his answer to Baggett picking up the pace at the mid  point in moto 2 showed Roczen’s competion he will be there for the full 30+2.

It was the opening round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship with the Red Bull Hangtown Motocross Classic where 40 of the fastest riders were looking to set the pace for 24 motos this summer. Qualified: 5th (1:58.958)
Fastest Lap: 1:59.603 (Moto 1, Lap 6)
Slowest Lap: 2:08.781 (Moto 2, Lap 17)
Turning Point: Villopoto was in 3rd for the first 10 minutes of moto 2 watching Dungey and Stewart battle for the lead. He hung back and got by Dungey after he made a mistake and then passed Stewart about 30 seconds later for the lead.

Off Week

The show moves from the stadiums to the great outdoors this weekend with the Red Bull Hangtown Motocross Classic national. Many riders were out putting finishing touches on their preparations this week.  This Pala Gallery by Austin White shows who was putting in some work. Austin also got the championship hopefuls putting on a show out at the Pro Ride Day at Lake Elsinore in this weeks video.

There are many story lines going on leading up to Saturday’s race. Bermeiseter boiled it down in this week’s Zero Hero preview. It is not that the series is too close to call. It is just too many (riders) to call! And that’s…….a good thing.

Did you count them? That’s 15 riders.  There will be quite a few on the outside looking in and others just happy to score a point or two.

And don’t forget to throw into the mix Austin Stroupe and Jaswon Lawrence.  If you follow them on any type of social media you have seen they are preparing for a comeback.  Will they actually show? Can they finish ahead of anyone I listed above? It is definitely a story line to follow this summer that is sure to add some drama.

The 250 class will be just as exciting.  Is Blake Baggett healthy enough to defend his title? Ken Roczen will for sure be stronger after a year under his belt and coming off of a 250 West SX championship. This is Eli Tomac’s last chance to win one before moving up to the 450′s next year. Zach Osborne has his GP experience. Rookies like Cooper Web and Adam Cianciarulo are looking to make their mark. And veterans like Jason Anderson and Blake Wharton will look to prove their worth. And there very well could be a dark horse to emerge this summer.

There is something about the start of the outdoors.  Supercross gets a bit stale and robotic the last few rounds.  Most of the riders have settled into their position and turn their training and testing to 30+2. The fans are much the same way.  It is a fresh start. Hopes and expectations are high and it is a new beginning.
