Renegade Fuel SX4: Review
Lately, in pro racing, we have been hearing about a new fuel that is giving huge gains in horsepower; enough for some very fast teams to make the switch. When we got the call from Josh Pitts from Renegade R&D offering up a chance to try this incredible fuel, we jumped at the chance. Launching in January 2010, the Renegade brand is fairly new to MX. However, the core team inside and behind the MX fuels have been around Motocross for many years. The experience of the R&D department stretches from Moto GP teams to 500GP 2 stroke years all the way back over to Formula 1 racing.
So, let’s get into this product test, get you some results and information about the ups and downs of this fuel. Test day was 100 to 110 degree weather on a Honda 450 2009 EFI bike. The rider was Austin White AMA Pro. Location was Arizona Cycle Park. Track condition was deep and loamy. We have everything in play. We started the day on pump 91 and then moved to the Renegade SX4. I have run all types of VP gas over the years from U4.4 to Pro4.1 and so on. Sine I have a feel for race gas, I knew what to expect when we switched the gas over. First time out we were doing timed sections, instantly I could feel the bike able to rev further than it had ever before. Soon I was figuring out I could run the gears out on my 450 twice as far cause the bike would just keep pulling and it seemed to never flatten out. I was pulling out of corners like I never had before, riding some long wheelies up to the face lips of jumps. Of course I would like to take credit for and not the gas on this one; but, I’m sure it had a 1% maybe 2% assist. The response between the gears was what came next. I noticed how the bike would transition to the next gear with little or no loss of power. At the end of the day my thoughts were like someone slapped on 2 more horsepower to my bike in the spots that it actually needed it.
Let’s give you some statistics and really help break it down for you here:
-Power gain of 5-7% over pump fuel
-Power of 2% over any other race fuel brand on the market
-Exclusive additive package to prevent gumming and deposits in carb and engine
-Developed with tops teams to stay stable in high heat and high temp locations with no boiling issues
-Packaged in new 5gal and 15gal drums (no used drums)
Ups:
–Instant Horsepower
–Run gears further and longer
–Pulls twice as hard off bottom, not hit which wears you out.
–Helps with gear transitioning
–SMELLS AMAZING
Downs:
–Have to drain tank unless you are riding the next day
–Mixing with pump gas is a waste
Notes: We didn’t even get to test the top fuel yet. SX4 is just entry level to AMA Pros. This gas ripped and actually showed improvements, large ones at that. But, like we said we haven’t even tested the top level stuff yet. When we get our hands on SX4+, we will be putting up a full review of it. These guys are serious about motocross and already are developing better gas as we speak. Most other companies haven’t developed something new for 4 years. If you don’t have that extra $1000 to spend on a pipe or extra horsepower, then why not just spend $100 and get some SX4. So, for a fraction of the price, you can pick up on some extra horsepower.
